Western Painted Turtle Habitat Assessment and Restoration

Species at Risk Habitat Inventory and Restoration

We are working to maintain a biodiverse environment in the Comox Valley through the use of innovative technologies to detect and support threatened species such as the Western Painted Turtle. We initiated a Western Painted Turtle habitat restoration project in the Comox Valley in spring 2024 with support from BC Hydro and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.  We are mapping the distribution of this red-listed species in and around the Puntledge Watershed using aquatic eDNA sampling and wildlife cameras, as well as identifying habitat enhancement opportunities. With continued support of our partners, we are planning to enhance Western Painted Turtle habitat using both established and novel restoration and management techniques.
