School District 71 Environmental Inventory

Environmental inventory and restoration

We were hired by Comox Valley Schools (SD71) in 2020 and 2021 to complete an Environmental Inventory of all 24 properties managed by SD71 in the Comox Valley. This project included mapping the watercourses, wetlands, mature forest, and all other sensitive habitats on these properties as well as identifying opportunities for habitat protection and restoration. Since this report was published, SD71 have committed a yearly budget to put towards habitat protection and restoration which our staff have helped to lead and facilitate. Restoration work to date has included stream enhancement, riparian planting, planting and restoration of trampled forest habitat, and planting trees and shrubs that attract pollinators. A key component of this work has been to involve teachers and students in the projects and inspire students to become stewards of the environment on their school grounds.
